Learning to Fly

Well since I can't be anything but me, and I'm just a real type of person, I'll just be real :)

Since I started homeschooling it's been hard to keep things balanced. I can either be organized and good at homeschooling, or I can be a good housekeeper and healthy cook. Doing both is like a complicated dance routine. And, since this is the first year of homeschooling, I've changed things up many many times, simply trying to find what works best for our famliy.

So last week I decided to go to Flylady's website. I hadn't been there in quite awhile, and she has lots of videos on there. The videos are really helpful and encouraging to me, to hear her southern voice of comfort telling me I don't have to be perfect LOL. She takes you through the year adding a good new habit each month. So, for January, shining up the sink is the habit you are learning. And she means just shining the sink, as in, put the dirty dishes on the floor if need be to get to the sink to shine it that first time.

So I did, which wasn't easy because my sink is not only white, it's made out of some type of plastic so it's really hard to get stains out. (yay for manufactured homes) I filled it with hot bleach water for an hour (on both sides) scrubbed with baking soda, sprayed bleach directly on it, windexed the faucet, went and bought some comet and scrubbed it and bleached it again. Still has stains. Oh well, it is clean! I've been making an effort each night to get it completely empty and scrubbed. This means that the dishes are getting done faster than before and I try to leave the kitchen as spotless as I'm able, depending on how the day goes.

Our house is in need of a gooooood declutter and spring clean. All those jobs that don't get done like straightening and cleaning out cabinets, tossing old toiletries etc., culling out TOO many clothes and so on, it's getting to the point where it has to be done. I don't clean our shower very often either, and it needs it. See, I'm just  being honest, because no one can be everything. A perfect clean home used to be important to me, like to the point I was obsessed. Thankfully that got replaced with a better attitude over the years.

It's important to me to have other fulfilling pursuits and to have time for them. I would rather spend 30 minutes knitting or sewing or reading than dusting the miniblinds. Not that I don't ever dust, it just gets done when I realize it is very needed. But, I need a better system and to create some better habits.

This week I plan to tackle some these tasks. The first and biggest one is the girls' clothes!!!!!!HOW can 4 little girls create such mountains of laundry???? Currently they share a large laundry hamper, and even if I'm washing their clothes 3 times a week, it is usually overflowing. I've paired down their clothes, but I think it's going to have to get done again. And let's not talk about socks...

Two of my daughters have dressers in the closet. So I'm planning to get rid of those and buy some plastic drawer things from walmart or target. Then, I can stack them on top of each other and they can each have two. (the closet is very big) I also plan to have a plastic tub for each of them to put the overflow of clothes into. Then, if we are behind on laundry or something and they don't have any clothes, they can get some out of their plastic tub. Maybe it'll work. Another part of the plan is teaching them how to do their own laundry from start to finish- they know how to sort clothes, put them in the washer and fold them, but not the other stuff.

And so, I regret to say a house tour will have to wait until I can get things nice again. You know how it is, it's like inviting the world into my house so it's gotta look like I want it! Soon though, very soon....

Happenings

If you look at my ticker up there you can see I'm in the third trimester now. Wow! I still have a hard time believing I'm actually pregnant again. I just really didn't think it would happen again because we were too scared to plan it. God helped us out I suppose.

So I now have less than 12 weeks before we have a family of 6. This Thursday I have to do the lovely 1 hour glucose test for gestational diabetes- yack! Plus I have to get a RhoGham shot since I have O negative blood and dh has positive. We are also going to do a very detailed sonogram, which is good, because since the last one I've had a very hard time convincing people it's not a boy. Sheesh. Then, it's back to the doc every two weeks now!

I have a new set of names. I abandoned the criteria of it has to end in an 'a' and it has to start with a different letter than my girls' names. It just got boring. Here are some new ones I like:

Brookley
Kimberley
Brielle
Samantha
Bethany
Callista- Callie

I still like Makayla and Brylee too...kind of a neat name would be Christina Evangeline- it means
"follower of Christ" "Messenger of Good News". And 'Brylee Faith' would mean 'courageous faith'...

Anyways, in other news (ha,ha) we have changed our minds about the house we picked. Sure we could probably afford it, but we feel it's best to live below our means so we can continue to get rid of debts. Plus, that house was well off the beaten path and when in the world is my husband going to be able to keep up 5 acres of land?? There was another home, manufactured but very nice, sort of in the country but next to other houses that we really liked. We're going to take a second look tonight. Plus it's only a mile from the school and town and our church.

It's time for me to buckle down and figure out what I need to be doing to prepare for moving again. Regardless of when we move, there are things I can work on now, though I dread it. I'm in the middle of sewing some dresses and the regular upkeep of the home etc. but I'm going to have to work in sorting and packing. I hate to strip the house of anything decorative because we still have to live here, but I'm just gonna have to do it.

One more thing, I have another recipe to share, but I forgot to take pictures before we ate it. I tried something called 'blender batter waffles' in which you grind up whole grains with buttermilk in the blender, allow to sit overnight, then add the rest of the ingredients and reblend. There's no flour in it and it's a way to use whole grains without a mill. They turned out really well. I used 1 cup of oats and 1/2 cup of millet. They come out light and crispy and we topped them with berries and syrup. If you click on the link to the left called 'Sue Gregg' she has the recipe on her site with picture directions. She has a cookbook with lots of other blender batter recipes too...I might invest in that one.

Well, time to get crackin. I need to do some cleaning, laundry, menu planning and sewing...busy weekend, busy week, as usual :)

Monday again

I think from now on I will try to use Monday as a weekly plan post, just because I'm sure you are all so interested in my weekly duties :)

I had a great weekend- birthday and Mother's Day rolled into one- the weather was on the hot side, but we still spent 3 hours at the zoo, sweating it out. Thankfully snow cones were only 92 cents :) I was begging for one along with my kids :)

So, what's my plan for this week. For one, to make it better than last week! Gee wiz, life hit hard last week. Everyday there was some new attack.

"We are pressed but not crushed, persecuted not abandoned, struck down but not destroyed. I am blessed beyond the curse for His promises endure and His joy is my strength." Romans? It's also a praise song.

Yesterday we voiced our issues to the church, and they all gathered around us, anointed us with oil and prayed. So now we have our whole church body standing with us on everything that is going on. We've been house hunting a lot, and have one to look at this week. It's a manufactured home that sits on 4 acres of pretty land, and apparently has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. All for under $100,000 in a prime location. We'll see.

If possible, I will take pictures of my new home management system. I like to call it my 'Brain in a Box'. You can see where I got the idea for it here. My goals this week are to maintain the house- it's in fairly good shape or will be after today, work on some sewing projects and work on cleaning up our diet a bit. Let me tell ya, big health nut that I am, we have fallen off the wagon big HUGE time. What's even more amazing is that I didn't care! One day, Friday I think, I let my children eat- sugary cereal (with raw milk), boxed macaroni and cheese, red Kool-aid, Doritos, chocolate animal crackers, then I made soaked pinto beans and macaroni and cheese (with white flour pasta) for dinner. I had made coffee ice cream from raw milk and cream, but it didn't make in time for that night.

So, I did some brainstorming on healthy kid foods. It doesn't take that much time to make your own chicken nuggets and french fries if you plan ahead a little and utilize your oven. I can make homemade popsicles, pudding, soaked whole grain cookies etc. It's just keeping it in your mind! Maybe I'll start posting what I make for kids and how it rated with them. Just remind me!

I am proud of myself this morning though- I made myself eat a good breakfast for my baby. I fried a quality egg in coconut oil, ate some soaked oatmeal with raw honey, a slab of butter and cinnamon, and about 4 oz raw milk. I also had some organic coffee. I made just enough to fill me without getting too full. Most of the time I am not in the mood to eat early in the morning.

For lunch I plan to make tuna fish sandwiches and try to get myself to eat a salad too. Dinner is roasted chicken and vegetables and salad. So, I should get enough protein and fat. I have raw almonds, cheese and yogurt to snack on too, plus the milk. I am supposed to drink a quart of milk a day!! I'm not even close to that yet. But I want this baby to grow good- mine are always so tiny at birth- they don't usually make it to 7lbs. I am hoping to get one over 7lbs this time.

I also take cod liver oil, kelp, good vitamins and a probiotic.

Alright, my to do list for today is:

do my morning routine, or finish it, which is- get dressed, make beds and tidy room, swipe the bathroom sinks and toilets, unload dishwasher and clean up kitchen (after breakfast), vitamins, start laundry

fold some clothes I washed over the weekend

I need to vacuum the front room

Mop the kitchen

wipe down appliances in kitchen

pay some bills

start a new kefir batch

get some flour and oats soaking for tomorrow

And hopefully, if time I need to cut out a new pattern I bought for baby, isn't it CUTE!!!

I will definitely make the diaper shirts and dresses and will probably make the long sleeved gown for winter.

Well, that's long winded enough. One question, this baby doesn't move a whole lot. The last two day she hasn't been very active. Some days she is, but it bothers me that the movements are so irregular. Anyone else have not-very-active babies in utero??

Day of Messes-warning, partly a female post

Yesterday was like the Twilight Zone or something. I woke up late for starters and found that (sorry if the is too much info) I had 'leaked' onto my bed. (from the monthly visitor) I didn't have time to change the bed because I needed to get Leiah ready for school. So I make her lunch and get breakfast started and realize that she has leaked on her bed (pee) and Alexa (the middle one) has also peed Sarah's bed.

After I got Leiah to school and go to get the beds changed, I find that Sarah took off her diaper and then peed in Alexa's bed. So, I get everything changed and washed. As the day went on, I myself went through two more pairs of clothes because I was bleeding so heavily! During snack time, I made them all sit at the table because I'm tired of cleaning crumbs off of everything. I got a phone call, and somehow they still managed to make a huge mess on the floor I had just mopped!!! So, about 4:30 in the afternoon they wanted to go outside. It has been pouring down rain for two days so the world is soggy and puddles all over. So I let them go- within 5 minutes all of them have fallen in the water. Sarah is dragging a blanket that I just washed that she peed on that morning. So I go outside to get them and my neighbor comes over to talk. I look over and Sarah has taken her skirt and diaper off, in the soggy yard. So I run over to fix her and step into a mudhole- my whole foot is covered in mud. The neighbor is still trying to talk to me through all of this- so I wash it off in a puddle and see that Sarah has taken off her shoes and is running in the wet grass in socks only. Finally, I get everyone to the porch, strip them down, get changed and get dinner on the table!

My husband had a wild day at work too...anyone else? Full moon?? Weird...

So, here's my question- ( I will try to give it as much feeling as possible)- CAN ANYONE HELP ME POTTY TRAIN MY CHILDREN PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stink at it- I can't even remember how we got Alexa trained. (just before she turned three) Sarah will be three in March and she seems to understand, but completely resists it. I haven't tried treats or anything yet. I have the toilet training in a day book, but I don't have a doll that potties...

Leiah you know is special and has a lack of communication at present. She goes potty at school but I don't know if she is actually going in the toilet. At home she doesn't indicate a need to go at all. Part of it is my fault because I get busy and forget. It's also hard for her to get up and down off the potty and pulling the clothes up and down can be a challenge for her too. She will be 6 in January, and I know she wants to be a big girl. I personally am getting real tired of changing poops- 2 or 3 a day. And we just can't afford all the pull ups/wipes and night time diapers. (those Goodnights things are expensive!)

So someone, please have mercy and help me. Come to my house and walk me through for the next few months. Ha, ha, just kidding...I wish...

Must get off- shopping day today.

A Case of the Mondays :)

Just a quick note to let you know I am here, just real busy. My husband is back at work this week, so I'm trying to get life flowing more normally again.

Leiah started school today. Unfortunately the school decided she should be in the special ed class again this year instead of kindergarten, so I'm trying to decide how far I want to push it. I can call another meeting and demand they do what I want and threaten to get a lawyer, but I'm not sure if that's the way to go here. I'm just not really happy with the situation, however, she was so excited about school I went ahead and started her today.

Now I'm down to two kids :) We did a little 'homeschool' today with Alexa, my four year old. She is so ready for reading. So I will be working with her each day on that. Sarah is picking up stuff too- smart little girls!

Our garden is planted and almost all of the seeds have sprouted. The weather is back to normal August Texas weather- HOT :) But it's mixed with badly needed rain too. My husband is also working on the chicken coop, so we'll be having chickens soon, maybe within a month and I am still in the middle of the quilt. My next step is to iron on the fusible web to all the little pieces, then cut them out, and then iron on the pieces to my white squares. Not hard, just grunt work :)

Well, it's time for my tea :) I am not sure when Leiah will be getting home (bus is bringing her) so I'm trying to get my work done. I'm already behind because of an unexpected outing I had to take for two hours!! Unpredictable Monday...

The answer

For those of you who have been reading my blog awhile, you know that I post about my struggles with balancing everything, especially in regards to my children. I am continually seeking the Lord on this and I finally got a clear answer so to say.

As a woman submitted to Christ and seeking to fulfill His purposes I must do as scripture says.

"...the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed." Titus 2:4-5

When I married my husband, God's will for me was to be a wife. When I had children, God's will for me was to be a mother. These are the most important and are obviously a worthy calling. I buy into lies at times though, thinking I'm not really doing much of anything or am not important in His kingdom.

However, this morning I read this:

"Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." Matt 11:11

Whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John the Baptist. Pretty neat huh?

So, this is what the Holy Spirit is saying to me:

My priorities are:

1. God

2. Husband

3. Children

4. Home

5. everything else

Therefore, if I order my day in this sequence, the most important things will be attended to first. I wake up at 5:15 and spend that time with Jesus- reading the Word and praying. Then I take care of my husband- make his lunch and breakfast and help him gather all his stuff for work, and throughout the day I am praying for him. Next is the children. My goal is to focus on them in the early/mid-mornings, learning how to work around the house, go outside while it's cool, working on something they want etc. Then, the time that is left, I use to tend to the home. The afternoons during nap time is my time :)

I also take time in the evenings for my husband as well, so it's not like I just drop him after the morning :) Anyways, just thought I would share what I've learned and hopefully it will help someone else.

Crazy Monday

I had great hopes that I would start off the week with my new schedule in place and all would flow well. Due to some, er, issues me and dh have been dealing with the last few weeks, I had a late night and an emotional morning. That's all I can really say about that. I had a sinkful and counterful of dirty dishes, garden produce spread all over another counter needing to be tended to, mounded over laundry hampers needing attention and various stuff scattered around. Not a pretty sight.

So, after I got myself together, I got dressed and made my bed and tidied my room. The girls had eaten breakfast already, so I allowed them to continue watching their movie. I worked on the laundry and picking up and getting the girls dressed. Movie was done, got them at the table to play with something quiet while I did dishes. Then I got myself some breakfast (it was almost 10am!) and coffee, took my vitamins and sat the table with them. I worked on some things in my home management binder and gave them each a whole pad of post it notes and a pen. That kept them busy!! Then I got my Bible and read some Psalms and some parables and explained it to them. Then I made a word chart with pictures for Alexa- I'm priming her for homeschool next fall :) Then we cleaned up and they went outside for a bit and I made lunch. After they ate I changed into workout clothes and went outside to dig some holes for some plants and planted them. Then I found our double stroller and loaded them in it and walked in the super hot sun! Do not ever buy anything Jeep related to baby equipment- the whole time I was walking I had to fight to keep it from turning to the right. Then I ran some--wow was I tired and hot!

We got in and got cold drinks and cold cloths to wipe ourselves down and prepare for rest/naps. Now I'm chilling out- literally I am trying to cool off. Then I'm going to take a shower, eat something for lunch and work on my to do list :)

So, thankfully the day has gone much much better that I thought it would. I prayed a lot for my attitude to be right and obviously He heard me. I also took my vitamins and supplements and that makes me feel better. So, commit your way unto the Lord and He shall direct your path. Give Him the firstfruits and He will bless your efforts. I am so so glad that I know the Lord, or rather, that He knows me.

Daily Routine and Stuff

I really like how Candy has her daily routines and to dos posted on her blog. I got an idea about how to simplify things in my binder so I don't have to keep flipping pages all over. I thought I would put all cleaning, meals, daily work etc. on one page for each day of the week.

Example:

Monday- To Do's

clean all appliances, stove/oven and fridge

wash bedding laundry

strain and make new kombucha brew

Bible study with girls-15 minutes or so

Brain Gym with Leiah- basic exercises

exercise- Jiggle Free Abs tape, 25 minutes

kids' showers

I shower and tweeze eyebrows :)

Kids' Cleaning Chores:
L- wipe down fridge and oven door, also tidy room, make bed, table chores
A- wipe down dishwasher and washer/dryer, room chores and table chores, feed pets
S- at sink, wash it, help with bedroom and toys pick up and assisting me

Meals- quick and easy- usually ground beef based such as: beef and rice, spaghetti, sloppy joes, tacos, chili et. Breakfast is usually scrambled eggs and toast, Lunch is sandwiches and fruit

My master schedule, well, i don't know how to post an excel spreadsheet. I broke it up and blocks rather than specific times. I decided that the easiest thing to do to ensure most everything got done each day was to get up early. So, from 5-7am I do my cleaning chores so that during the kid's chore time I can help them without getting distracted. So far I've only been able to get up at 5:30-5:45, but we've had guests and been up later than expected.

I'll have to include my routines and such another time- I am out of computer time for now.

Today I went to get groceries, and got tied up on the computer with some bills this morning, so we haven't done Bible, Brain Gym or exercise etc. Sarah was very cranky when we got home and I put her in the playpen for trying to hit me (!) and she ended up falling asleep. The other two ate lunch while I put groceries away and then I let them watch a movie we just rented. Now Leiah is asleep on the couch an Alexa will be going to her room for a nap/rest time in a bit, which means Sarah may be up before they are that will throw me off. OH well. In the mean time I have clothes to fold and more to wash, bread to bake (in bread machine), buttermilk to make and kefir to strain, make 2 gallons of koolaid (yes I allow it once a week or two) and finish cleaning my bathroom. However I don't have to cook dinner because what I cooked yesterday didn't get eaten- we ate out instead. We will probably go outside at some point and get in the pool to cool off- yes even with central air it can sure get hot in here!

Gotta GO! But there it is and I think it will work. So far it seems to flow well with our lives. It is just a guide however and I certainly need one :)

June 13, 2008

My Friday

I really expected today to be a wash out. The past week I have gotten only 4-6 hrs of sleep each night for various reasons. Mostly because I wake up and can't get back to sleep. The past two nights I've only had 4 hrs. We were at the church last evening working on music for Sunday and had some errands to run, so the girls didn't get to bed till 10pm.

So, when I got up at 6:30 and so did they, I greatly dreaded the day. So, I sent them back to bed for awhile so I could get myself 'together'- clothes on, bed made, breakfast in the oven, I had a sink full of dishes from last night because I was so tired I just left it, did those, then I 'let the girls out' LOL. We laugh at that term, like we're letting caged animals out or something.

Anyways, wow I'm rambling, I was so sleepy and tired. We all ate breakfast and I made a cup of coffee. They asked to watch TV so I let them and sat in my recliner. I decided to go get my Bible and read that since my spirit man is more important than sleep. I didn't get to read a lot, but my day has gone so so well. My heart is peaceful and calm. At about 8:45 I decided we better get around and get some things done.

We got dressed and began working on the bedrooms- rearranging them and tidying up. After that it was obvious the girls were super tired, so I declared a quiet time- Sarah in her bed, Alexa in her bed, Leiah on the couch. I set the timer for 25 minutes. I unpacked a few boxes and then sat in the chair to rest a few minutes. Leiah fell asleep and I got the other two a snack while I folded clothes and put them away. Then we all did one cleaning chore- Alexa wiped down mirrors and screens and Sarah helped me clean the toilet in our bathroom. Then we woke Leiah up and I got them at the table to do playdough. I finished cleaning both bathrooms then made lunch and set it aside. They started coloring at the bar where I was cooking and I showed them how to really color a page in the coloring book. We cleaned all the playdough up and had a bath. They really needed one last night, but it was just too late. We ate lunch- they had macaroni and cheese with sweet frozen peas mixed in (thawed of course) and fruit cocktail and lemonade. I had leftover corn chowder.

They asked to watch a movie so I put Finding Nemo in the VCR and they made little beds on the floor. I swept and cleaned up the table then sat down with some cookbooks to look for a quick dessert recipe idea. (I usually make one on Friday) We are having tacos, chips and refried beans. I think I'll make some peanut butter and jelly bars. Sounds good :)

The reason I'm writing about all of this is because I truly expected to get almost nothing done today; I thought I have really whiny gripey children. But I didn't. Oh there have been some moments, but on the whole, it's been a very good day. Thank you Jesus :)

Still on the agenda is to unload the dishwasher and reload it, make our dessert and dinner, fold up the diapers in the dryer, prep any food that needs it for tomorrow etc.,figure out what I still need from the store,( I always forget stuff) and I have some plants I need to get planted.
Oh and the big one, take a NAP!!!

Putting the Lord first doesn't always make the day go perfect, but when He sees us seeking Him first He is blessed and wants to bless us. We serve an awesome God.

April 15, 2008

My Tuesday, so far...

I should be taking a nap right now. My eyes are so tired and heavy.
Anyways, it has been a busy day. I had to leave earlier today because Leiah had an appointment with the Brain Gym specialist in addition to her regular speech therapy. So, I decided to get up at 5am this morning to get a good start on the day.

Well, so did the oldest two girls. They woke up on their own at 5! Um, I don't think so. Leiah never went back to sleep, but I still made them stay in their beds in a dark room. So I did my Bible/prayer time, made dh's lunch, put supper in the crockpot, made breakfast, did the dishes, started some laundry etc. Then I made our grocery list and menu because I am planning to get that done while out and about too.

So we all get ready and drive to my mom's. I drop the younger two off and take Leiah to her appointments. Then my mom brings the other two up to the therapy place because she has to take my grandmother to the doctor. I get them in the car and my husband shows up. We decided to go to Sonic for lunch because they have a playground and it was a nice day. Note- anything fried from Sonic, except french fries, has a rancid aftertaste. Must be from the oil-yack!
After all that I drive to the grocery store. They all need diaper changes/potty breaks so we do that first. Everyone is doing well. Then Sarah's shuts her fingers in the door and things didn't go so well. I got them all in the buggy (note- Texan's say buggy, not cart, funny) and start going down my list. Last week I didn't buy quite enough, so I made sure to buy extra pantry items so I would have plenty on hand to work with.

The girls did very well- I kept them busy with food samples and asking what they wanted etc. They had a few skirmishes, but considering they'd been up for so long they did well. I got a lot of food, most of it unprocessed and some organic plus some household items, for $125. Not great, but better than I thought it would be. After I got home it all hit- Sarah was grouchy! Leiah had fallen asleep, Alexa was bouncing off the walls and I had loads of groceries to get in the house. Well, while I was getting the food in, I lost Sarah. She ran off to the neighbor's house chasing our cat. Oh I was scared-I couldn't believe I lost her. Next time I will confine her before I start going in and out of the house.

They are all asleep now and I should be :) A year ago a trip like that would have equaled insanity to me. But sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do. I think it makes me stronger and builds character. I don't enjoy getting out with all the kids to shop all that much, but I did today. All in the attitude :)

Tomorrow I am starting the first of several 'spring cleanses'. Can you believe I'm actually excited about colon cleansing? LOL, I am excited about feeling better, having clearer thinking and clear skin and a better working body in general. I plan to elucidate my cleansing tomorrow, if anyone is interested :)

Oh, to 'Mama', I will try to get more on here about the kiddies-there sure is a lot to tell!

Workin' Wednesday

Whew! I need a break!

I've been going all morning and now I can finally take a moment to relax. Wednesday is usually the day I do wet cleaning chores, such as mopping, bathrooms etc. However, our pastor and his wife are coming later this evening so I wanted to make sure I vacuumed and stuff. I attempted to do an Emergency Quick Clean, but the 'quick' took me several hours. Yes it would have been quicker to wait till nap time to do it, but I wanted the afternoon to work on some sewing.

I got up before 6:30, made the bed and got dressed, and donned my 'new' vintage full length and very worn apron I found at a resale shop yesterday. I wanted to make dh a hearty breakfast so he'd not get hungry soon after getting to work. (yesterday's homemade granola and yogurt didn't cut it) I heated two skillets, added a few lumps of coconut oil, peeled and sliced two potatoes and then layered them in one skillet and sprinkled some salt and pepper on top. Then I fried three eggs in the other pan. I toasted some homemade sourdough bread, spread it with butter and reheated yesterday's coffee. (dh doesn't mind it, but I had to make a new pot for myself later) I then scrambled some eggs for the kids and I. I thought I would try using buttermilk instead of regular milk or cream when scrambling the eggs. Well, don't use the cheaper more watered down buttermilk because all it did was completely change the texture of the eggs and produce tons of water!!! I was fighting mad too- wasting good eggs like that. I ate about 1/3 c of them with salsa on top and it was fine. The kids ate it with ketchup and no one noticed. Lesson learned- buy the good stuff always.

After all of that, I sat down with my fresh coffee and read my Bible while the older girls watched some cartoons. Then I made some more yogurt, did a bit of laundry, got the baby situated with milk and food, dressed the girls and got to work. Today I let them watch some 'new' videos I bought from the resale store and play while I cleaned. I wiped down surfaces and appliances, windexed the mirrors and screens, cleaned all sinks, toilets, counters, swept and spot mopped bathrooms, put baking soda all over the floors and vacuumed, doused some cotton balls with essential oils and hid them in the bedrooms and bathrooms, changed the bathroom trash etc. In between that I fixed hair, did Leiah's exercises, changed diapers etc.

I got the girls at the table with playdough while I made a meatloaf and fixed their lunch. Then I mixed up cookie dough- an experiment with healthy ingredients. Next on the list is clearing off the desk, finish mopping the kitchen, cutting out some fabric for a new blouse pattern and maybe a nightgown for Leiah, finish baking the cookies and make dinner later. If weather and energy level permits I will plant the flowers we got last weekend. It's also a bath night tonight, so, still lots to do. But, then I will be DONE! Tomorrow and Friday will be practically free, save a few touch ups here and there and will leave time to work on sewing etc.

Did I mention how my energy levels have been since on the coconut oil? Ha, ha, and shall I also mention that yesterday my monthly friend came to visit? Yeah, and I've been great! I've been making a large pitcher of red raspberry leaf tea when the 'time' is approaching and drinking it. BIG HELP! No cramping, no bloating, no aches of any kind, slight moodiness and it only visits for three days instead of seven! Praise the Lord!

Getting ready for the week...

So what have I been up to?

Friday I took Leiah to the Brain Gym lady again and she did wonderful! The lady was soooo excited about her progress and told me she thought we would really begin to see some good changes in Leiah. It takes time though.

Anyways, she also writes curriculum for preschools and elementary grades and had some great ideas for activities. One of which, you won't believe how simple and cheap it is. Take an empty bottle, such as a syrup bottle with a lid that has a big enough hole for a piece of yarn. Make sure it's cleaned and dry, then get about two feet of yarn, knot both ends, and feed it through the hold in the lid of the bottle. After it's all in there, 'squirt' the bottle and the yarn comes shooting out. Part of the game is to get them to practice threading the yarn in the hole. My nephew played with it all afternoon, and he is a high energy kid.

Another thing we did over the weekend was take some plastic bottles, such as those for water or soda, but not liter sized. We filled one with water, added some food coloring, glitter, colored foil bits (I found it in the birthday section of walmart) various small objects (I raided the girls' dress up box and hair accesory boxes) then glued the lid. It's supposed to be a 'calming' toy and it's fun to shake it up and see all the glittering objects. The other we filled with half blue water and half baby oil so the objects 'floated' like boats. I couldn't find any small fish, shells or boats anywhere at walmart though! We keep them up high so curious hands don't get them without us knowing and somehow bust it open :)

We now have less than two weeks before we drive to the UP. (upper Michigan) It is terribly cold there I've heard, and it's in the 70s here! I need to start making packing lists and get that going so there won't be so much to do the day before.

This week I am trying to figure out how to fit everything in that needs to be done while taking Leiah to speech. It's just one day a week for now, but it still takes me an hour one way to get there, so it pretty much takes up half the day, plus any other errands I need to run. I think the only way I will be able to do it all is wake up at 5am!

My FIRM tapes made it in! I have to start this week even though I don't have hand weights or a step stool thingie. If I don't I won't be able to sled or ski much in the snow later.

I'm also looking for a new hairdo. This time last year I cut my very long hair pretty short. I liked it for awhile, then got tired of it, then was stuck with the growing out stage. Now it's considered 'long'-a few inches past my shoulders. I don't consider that long. Anyways, I may try a straight hair style with bangs- do you know I haven't had bangs since the early 90s when we curled them and poofed them out and sprayed hairspray all over? Maybe I should start that trend up again, ha,ha. I couldn't let myself go out in public like that!

Just for kicks, my husband found a free tool on the internet that let me upload my picture and it would put different 'celebrity' hairstyles on my head. You can even change the color and highlight it. Let's just say blond is not me :) We put dh and the kids' faces in there too, silly us!

Busy week ahead! I'm going to try 3 Week Cleaning from Candy's website. (keeping the home)

There is of course the usual cooking, tidying, bed-making, table chores, school, brain gym, sewing, Bible study, blogging, new exercise routine, etc... I also plan to work in a fun Valentine craft in there somewhere, if not this week then for sure next week. Oooh, the brain gym therapist also gave me some GREAT recipes for kids- silly putty, edible playdough, face paint etc. If anyone is interested I can post them.

Gotta go- maybe I can sew a bit on Alexa's dress before bed.

Another busy Day

Yet another busy day today. Tomorrow my mom, nephew and niece will be here, and it will be quite busy, so I had to get everything done today for the week. So, this morning the girls helped with vacuuming, mopping and cleaning bathrooms. Well, they sort of helped, mostly watched. Miss Sarah has been exhibiting more of an attitude lately; she needed lots of correction today, as did the other two. I was planning to start a 'boot camp' of sorts next week, but I have to go to the neighboring city twice, we'll see. I really just need to review www.raisinggodlytomatoes.com

So, anyways, I did sit down and read several books for our 'school' while Sarah played in the playroom. (I finally bought a gate) Then we tried going outside, but it's just too cold. Then I heated last nights pot of veggie soup and we had lunch. My cousin came by and my children turned into terrors! Finally, they were doing so badly it was obvious it was nap time. While they were laying down I started a new batch of kefir, kombucha and was going to make more sourdough bread, but I'm out of all purpose flour and I'm not sure if it would work well with 100% whole wheat. (as in, we were going to eat it for dinner and not enough time for it to rise)

I still need to make some cookies-whole wheat peanut butter, make some tomato sauce for lasagna today and pizza tomorrow and fold a load of clothes. I'm trying to buy less meat because I wanted to save us some money-well, forget that ! I worked so hard trying to make things come out for $70 or less, and it was still $100. Last time I just bought whatever we needed without worrying too much about what it cost and is $80. How did that happen?

So, we've been having more meatless meals or stretching the meat more. Last night we had vegetable noodle soup with homemade chicken stock and some chicken sandwiches made with homemade rolls and the leftover chicken from making the stock. Tonight we will have spinach-cheese lasagna, salad and garlic butter rolls. (same batch of rolls, I'll just paint them with garlic butter and heat them)

I didn't realize how much cooking I did around here- it doesn't seem like a lot but typing it all up makes it seem like a lot. Ok, so anyways, tonight I have go to Walmart and get yellow thread and rick rack to finish Leiah's dress and get some more winter clothes for ME! I'm alternating between two blue jeans, 1 black pants, and several skirts, and when it's less than 40 degrees outside, I want pants please :)

Ok, enough rambling about my day...

My Monday

Today I didn't have much planned, but a lot happened.

7am, I've been awake for a few minutes (I always sleep thru dh's alarm) and can't believe that it's already morning- and I went to bed before 10pm!

I got up, got dressed, tidied the bedroom, took the laundry hamper to the laundry room, then went to the kitchen. I tidied a few things in there, then started frying eggs for my hubby, and started water boiling for cornmeal 'mush'- an experiment. Next I started the coffeepot :)

The children were getting pretty loud so we let them come out,LOL. Hubby got his lunch together, ate his breakfast, and while he got the rest of his things together (he really needs a 'man purse' hahaha!) I made him some coffee in a thermos and off he went to work.

The girls and I had a fried egg, cornmeal cereal with sugar and milk, and banana bread muffins and milk.
I sat in the recliner with my coffee for a few minutes to collect my thoughts about how our day should go. Then I started cleaning up the kitchen and doing dishes while the girls watched Little Bear.
I started the laundry and started a large pot of chicken stock.
Get the girlies dressed, room tidied and beds arranged, then did hair and teeth, then started school. It's now after 9:30 am. Next I make a phone call to the speech therapist to get Leiah's appointments set up.

We did Brain Gym, numbers and shapes on the chalkboard, then Sarah was getting very fussy, so I took her to the living room, put her in the playpen and let her watch Baby Einstein and play with toys. Then we did flash cards with sight words and ABC ones. I got a phone call, so afterwards we moved to the couch for reading while they snacked on some fruit loops. I got another phone call, but couldn't cut it short (important) then it was getting to be lunch time.

The girls had some free play time while I worked on lunch. I never have a plan for lunch and so I was thinking grilled cheese sandwiches, and then I realized I had hot chicken broth on the stove, crushed tomatoes in the cupboard, and half and half in the fridge- DUH, make tomato soup! It was yummy- we ate it with the sandwiches, they got some apple juice and I drank water. I got my sourdough starter out, fed it, then washed it's container good, then put it back in it's 'home', then back in the fridge.

My cousin comes over on her lunch break a few times a week, so she arrived and I fed her hot soup and a sandwich and visited awhile. Then it was time for naps. We had several discipline issues today, which I attribute to the busy-ness of the weekend and being around other children that are unruly at church.

Anyhoo, while they napped I did some menu planning and reading online, then I went to the kitchen. This is where the unexpected part comes- I did a lot of cooking in there! I took the chicken out of the pot to let it cool so I could pick it off the bones. Then I chopped up some veggies and got them cooking in some butter. Next I heated some water in another pot to cook some quinoa (keen-wah) for a recipe I had seen last week. I did some dishes, made some iced tea, thickened the veggie sauce I had going and added the chicken, then poured it in a casserole. I made up some dumpling 'dough' and dropped it on top to bake for dinner.

Hubby called to say he wasn't feeling well and was on his way home. Leiah and Sarah woke up (Alexa had been awake for awhile) and they had snacks of homemade chocolate chip cookies and bananas. Matt came home and rested while they girls watched Snow White and I folded clothes. I made the batter for the quinoa and decided to put it in a loaf pan instead of a muffin tin and put it in the oven. I heated a fried egg in the microwave left from breakfast, chopped some lettuce and tomatoes and added that to some leftover salad. Then I cut two sort of thick slices of stale bread, then cut it into cubes. I heated some olive oil in a skillet, added the bread cubes, then sprinkled salt, garlic powder and dried thyme on top. I stirred and toasted the bread till dry in the pan and lightly browned. After it cooled I added it to the salad with a good grating of romano cheese (marked down at the store last week)

We ate dinner, then started the clean up process and my quinoa loaf finished baking. Dh gave the girls baths because my hands were chapped and red from being in hot water so much today and while he did that I cleaned the living and play rooms, then rearranged the girls bedroom, again...

We get them in pjs, play a bit, take vitamins, drink of water, off to bed. I heat some milk to make some yogurt, and now I'm blogging. After the milk cools I will add yogurt from the previous batch and let it sit overnight. I have a good batch of kombucha going- it's on the sweet side so I'm letting it sit at room temp tightly closed so it develops carbonation like coke. I don't usually do this because it can get more sour, but since it's on the sweeter side it should be pretty good tomorrow. (just tasted it- good, but a bit sweet) I still have two loads of laundry to be folded and put away, but it's mine and hubby's clothes and many of them need to go in the closet as they aren't 'foldable'.

What's next? Sewing! Last Thursday I had planned to sew all afternoon, well, when I sat down to my machine, the thread kept tangling up, so as I was checking it out a big fat black spider crawls out!!!!!!!!! I literally felt a shock wave go through my body- wow was it nasty looking, no wonder my thread was getting tangled. I went to get something to kill it with and of course it was gone when I came back. I poked around a bit with some scissors, no spider. No way was I going to sit there and sew now. I made dh take it apart Friday-no spider, and he just got it put back together yesterday evening. Leiah's dress is barely started!

I hope to go to bed early so I can get up earlier-we'll see...

Daily Life

A little while back I put up my schedule and routines for this year, and then I took them down. The death of our friends' little girl and my increasing frustration led me to look at things a bit differently. Maybe I could do tons of stuff each day and get a lot done, but at what expense? Me being burned out and tired and my husband and children would suffer.

I know God gave us these children for a reason, and while I am supposed to be a keeper of the home, first and foremost I am a wife and mother. Reality check- my oldest is special needs. She really needs a lot of time one on one to develop better. She is going to need a lot of practice and work to get potty trained and we have to constantly remind her to do her signs or try to say words etc. Sometimes she won't utter a sound for the whole day unless prompted.

My middle child is very smart and picks up on when I am busy or frustrated or something and makes her move. (this morning she tried to sneak a piece of candy from the cupboard then lied about it) She is ready for reading and school in general, but she needs lots of help till she gets it.

Little Sarah is amazing us! She can count to 10-she can barely talk but she can count. She is a smart cookie too, and is at a great teaching age as well.

So all that to say that I have reevaluated how our life should be spent each day and through the help of the Holy Spirit I finally figured it out. In fact it came to me when I was sitting at the piano Sunday morning waiting to play the song for our offering,LOL.

1. Routines are going to be the backbone of keeping things together. I have a morning and evening one, and hope to get a consistent one for the afternoon. For now this is what I do each morning:
make bed after getting up
get dressed
tidy bedroom and bathroom
get laundry started if needed (I"m trying to get most of it done in 1-2 days instead of all week)
make breakfast
tend to girls
*after we eat and clean up, I go to the recliner and read my Bible while they play

Afternoon:
rest time and computer
finish folding and putting away laundry
do any food preps for next day or cultures
get started on dinner if needed
make sure house is tidied before dh gets home
vacuum if necessary

Evening:
tidy the house
make dh's lunch
prep breakfast
unload dishwasher
set meat or juice to thaw out
get ready for bed (bath/shower etc.)
Bible

2. If I spend the first part of the day totally focused on the girls, then hopefully they will be better content to play on their own later. This was what came to me in church. They are usually raring to go first thing in the morning. I want to 'wait till I get everything else done', then play. What usually happens is I end up working all morning, then it's lunch and naps, then no time to play. I want to get it done first thing, but I will just have to make myself wait till later to do cleaning etc.
So the idea is, after breakfast clean up we get everyone dressed, hair and teeth, tidy bedroom, then go to the play/school room (Sarah's old room that I'm working on) and play and do 'school' for 1-2 hrs. I can bring laundry in there and fold it if I need to, or maybe get them into an activity and do short cleaning chores nearby checking on them frequently. We'll see.

3. I have got to make exercise a priority. I keep putting it off and I realize that I will never have time to do it if I wait till everything else is finished first. So I am planning to do it mid-morning after our school while they watch a video. Haven't tried it yet, but that's my plan.

4. No more shopping with all of them. Sometimes it works but most of the time not. They just aren't self disciplined enough to control themselves yet. I'll just have to go at night again or on the weekends until they are trained better. Talk about wear yourself out!

5. I haven't figured out cleaning yet. I think I will make a check list of everything that needs to be done each week/month so I don't forget, and then as I can get to it, I'll do it. I will probably use Monday as a cleaning day, because the house usually needs pretty bad after the weekend, and then maybe one other day to clean. My wonderful husband has volunteered to help me with laundry if we do it all in one day. Still thinking on that.

So, I am going to do a kitchen series called 'A Week in my Kitchen' and it may or not be a whole week. It will just depend on how it goes. I plan to show all the interesting things that I make each week, my method of doing things and recipes. I am always so interested in other people's food LOL. So I thought maybe if I started this, someone else would want to do it too. Plus, even if I make menu for you all to see, there are usually changes at some point during the week. I don't think I've ever gone strictly by my menu.

Well, time to go, I need a nap!
