Smells

I have a problem. Everything is extremely odiferous- as in stinky or strong smelling- to me. Cigarette smoke is the WORST and I can smell the slightest hint of it. I am forever smelling something bad and I want to know how to make the house smell good.

I used up all my Febreeze and things to spray it on. I am out of cinnamon sticks to simmer on the stove. I only have one giant candle that is a pumpkin spice scent, but I want fresh and clean. I opened the windows, but it still stinks in here! I have heard of putting vinegar out in the open and it will absorb smells overnight, but sometimes you need a quick fix before you gag you know?

Actually, the smell of a super soaked diaper stinks more to me than a poopy one. Weird. Burned food is bad, stinky trash, stinky dog is bad, but hands down, the urine and the cigarette smoke are the worst. What does a heightened sense of smell have to do with a growing baby??

I don't know exactly why smells are worse for pregnant women, but I was exactly the same way!!! When I was pregnant with my firstborn, my husband was a cook in the Army and I couldn't stand the smell of him when he came home. I literally went in the other room when he came home while he went into the bathroom to derobe and shower. It was that bad. He usually tried to keep his dirty clothes in his car because they had a free laundry on base. Yeah, bad. I also couldn't stand the smell of any food. I lost 20 pounds during the first 3 months because any smell literally made my stomach roll, even if I wasn't eating it or even near it...just thinking about it was enough!!!

Sorry you feel so awful, but just think, "I'm gonna have a baby when this is all over..."

I guess if there was any really harmful chemical in the air then you'd smell it and avoid it therefore protecting the baby.

do you have a crockpot? try this

you can also get an oil diffuser(?)
y'know, oil in a vase with some essential oils and thin sticks that the oil climbs up and diffuses into the air? anyway, make you own so that it doesn't make you gag.

I think the heightened sense of smell if for your baby's and your protection. If you are about to eat a food, but it doesn't smell right, then you tend not to eat it, for example.

Gastrointestinal distress is always bad, but even more so when preggers. ;-)

Even if you have a bottle of lemon juice or orange juice, put it in a small saucepan with a good sprinkle of cinnamon and whatever "pie" spices you have in there, and simmer. It won't be strong, but it will be clean smelling.
How about a super dilution of clorox in water and wipe down all the doorways, countertops, bathrooms and floors? Just a quickie, and nice and diluted. It will kill any bacteria that may produce odors. Remember, Clorox brand is the brand that survivalists use to put a smidge into water to make it DRINKABLE. It's the type of chlorine that isn't harmful in small amounts.

How about putting lotion on around your neck and chest? Lotion is so much less stinky than perfume.

Hope it gets better!

I'm not pregnant, but I have an EXTREEEEEEEEMLY sensative nose to smells! Yes, cigarette smoke is the worst! And as a side note, ever wonder why people stand right by the door to the entrance of places and smoke so you have to inhale it while you enter and exit?? :/ ??

For making the house smell fresh. Have you tried to use fabric softener? I dilute it with water and put it in a spray bottle & go around spraying everything! LOL

I love candles and other smell goods, but the thing that works the best is opening a few windows.

I know what you mean about the smells. Everything bugged me when I was pregnant with each of my girls. When I was pregnant with my youngest one the smell of the frozen food section at Walmart (yes it actually has a frozen "odor" of some kind) would make me nauseous. I still have a very strong sense of smell since I've had her, although it doesn't make me sick now. Maybe it's some type of chemical change to your senses that pregnancy does.

I coudn't stand even the smell of Febreeze. I would guess just fresh air and avoiding all stinky smells as much as possible. Smells got so bad for me ,with my last two pregnancies, that I had to use unscented soap, natural shampoos and unscented deodarant or I would feel just awful!

Both my pregnancies I felt this way. The first was a little worse. Even the smell of soap and shampoo made me ill. Until I found lemon. Lemon was delightful for some reason.

To make the house smell good try making your own spray. http://candcmommyfactory.blogspot.com/2008/11/stink-away.html
