An Everything Post

This is going to a bit of everything post today. Mainly because if I don't do it all now, it may not get done later :)

First off, we had a fun weekend. Like I said, we don't really 'do' Halloween, but our pastor hosts a "weiner roast" every year and we allow the girls to dress up. Or in this case, get covered in makeup. This is our ATTEMPT to paint them like cats. I say attempt because, well, we didn't decide to do this until 30 minutes before we had to leave!!!

Our cats:

Oh well. They thought it was fun :)

The next morning, Sunday, I dressed them in casual but new clothes. Sometimes I just don't feel like getting them all frilly with tights and all that- especially when it's cold out. I haven't put pictures of the older girls up in awhile, so here they are.

They sure are growing! One could certainly go broke trying to keep them in clothes that fit and look nice :)

Next topic- recipes!

This is me and my husband's new favorite meal. I watch the cooking show "Nigella Feasts" on Saturday mornings, and her recipes are fabulous. This is one I tried and have been craving it every week- great for fall and winter.

Cornbread topped Chili

2lbs ground beef
1 large onion
1 red or green bell pepper
1 T red pepper flakes, or less if you wish
1 T ground cumin
(I add) 2-3 T chili powder
1 T garlic powder
1 T cocoa powder
salt and pepper
1 small can tomato paste
1/2 cup ketchup
1 14oz can diced tomatoes
1-2 cans kidney beans or other beans (the second time I used pinto beans I had cooked and frozen)
Some water if needed to cover.

Just saute the onion and pepper in olive oil, then add meat and spices. When meat is cooked add everything else and let simmer at least 30-45 minutes. Transfer to oven safe dish. Make cornbread topping:

1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
1 T baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
2 T sugar
1 t salt
1 egg
1/4 cup oil or butter
1/2-1 cup milk

Mix dry ingredients together then add wet ingredients making a smooth batter. Spoon on top of chili and an even layer. Put into preheated oven (400 degrees) and cook approximately 20-25 minutes or until top is golden brown.

I serve with grated cheddar cheese, sour cream, guacamole if possible, and salad. (we mix the salad with the chili- must be a southern thing) You can also serve corn chips with it. YUM! I plan to make it this week for my mom and dad- mom is having surgery to fix her broken foot that she's been walking on for over two weeks!

Since we're in the kitchen, I am going to reveal my worst um, procrastination. I hate cleaning the fridge. I mean, I hate emptying out leftovers that no one ate that are now expired. The problem is I put it off for WAY too long, and by then things start growing fuzz. Today was THE day to fix it- lovely. Here is the aftermath- be glad you didn't see what was in these dishes.

The sink and counter are piled with dishes that had been living in the fridge for weeks. Yack!

So what is your dirty homemaking procrastination secret? Anyone got any?

One more thing- last week I was cleaning out toys. The girls' bedroom is quite blank. We just didn't have the time to paint it or anything before we moved in. I was really wishing I had one of those nets you can hang in the corner of the room to hold stuffed animals and dolls. And then an idea came to me. This is what it looked like.

Notice the animals are 'suspended' on the wall? I used pink ribbon, tied it around their necks and then hung them with a push pin.

I also found a calendar I'd had since 2004! So I cut the pictures out and used my trusty clear push pins to hang them. I AM the thumb tack/ push pin queen. You should see what I can do with them :)

I have another project going that hopefully I can get done today. We'll see...but it's just using what you have to decorate.

Anyways, that's that. Enjoy the drive by posting :)

hah..pushpins!!the stories i could tell! anyway, my 'dirty little secret" is...i HATE to mop, it drives me crazy, all the water and chemicals, so we bought one of those shark steam mops, only water, and it dries in seconds, but i hate to do thst too, it's a quirk, but i would rather get on my hands and knees to clean, ugh, so silly! wanted to tell you the girls are sweeties too! i have to go vote now, it's mayoral election day in new york...

Your girls are ADORABLE!!

I like what you did with their room! I decided to keep last year's calender because I really liked the pictures with Scripture on them ... I intend to cut 'em out and maybe frame them and hang them around the house. Just haven't done it yet lol

We LOVE Chili Cornbread (that's what we call it) here!! Great way to use up leftover chili!!

I hate cleaning the fridge too and washing dishes. I do the dishes everyday because of course they would get way out of hand if I didn't and my fridge needs to be cleaned out, I think I will do that today.

I love the decorating with the animals and pictures. Wonderful idea!

My procrastination is with filing. All the mail that comes through the house and old bills that need to be filed and tax receipts etc etc. We have a pretty basket at the bottom of the stairs that is just overflowing with stuff to be filed. Eventually I will start tripping over it and get the job done. Maybe I could just buy a bigger basket?

My biggest procrastination is filing.
